Independent review of HR function for national not-for-profit

Our client offers national disability support services to a niche market of the disability services sector. This national NFP had redefined their strategic direction and needed an independent review of their HR capability and operations.

Our client wanted to ensure they had the right capability to deliver on their strategic people initiatives and operational needs. Their members are at the heart of the organisation. This NFP prides itself on offering their members access to a range of services and delivering a consistent standard of care. The ability to attract, develop and retain a skilled workforce is critical to the continued success of the organisation.

A holistic approach to building HR capability.

Challenge

We began by conducting a review of our client’s HR service model, practices, structure and capability using a program Sonia developed called HR by Design. The review was conducted using ‘human centred design’ principles and involved a confidential survey, two hour workshops, one on one interviews and a review of HR data, reports and analytics.

The senior leaders also received a one on one debrief of the results, together with a tailored report.

Solution

The outcome of this review did two things:

Helped the team understand the barriers and issues from a customer perspective, and the HR team were able to empathise with the problems faced by key stakeholders.

Provided the executive team with practical recommendations to help bridge the gap, provide evidence-based insights and make informed decisions on the future direction of HR services.

Feedback

The client was appreciative of our responsiveness, professionalism and the high quality of the report. The recommendations made were timely as there was an interim Chief HR Officer appointed a few weeks after the report was submitted.

Importantly, the independent review provided for a transparent, collaborative and evidence-based approach to gathering information and to develop practical recommendations for the executive team’s consideration and action.
